Return to Top Glossary of TermsBlank StockThese are non-printed invitations. Blank stock is usually purchased when the customer would like to print the invitations on a home computer and printer. Die-CutA metal block that is used to cut shapes, designs and edges into card stock. A die-cut invitation is an unusual shape that takes the form of the object in the invitation. EmbossingA process in which a copper plate is compressed onto paper or napkins, creating the printed text in a slightly raised impression on the front, and an indented impression on the back. Flat CardsAlso known as a panel card, flat cards are never folded, and typically made of heavy stock. Flat cards are usually printed with a person's name or monogram at the top of the card, as the rest of the card is reserved for writing. Flat PrintingThe technique used in flat printing utilizes an image created on a rubber cylinder, which is then inked and transferred onto paper. Flat printing is also known as 'offset printing. Envelope LiningA section of colored paper that is added to the interior flap of the envelope. Typically, a liner color is selected to coordinate with the invitations or the ink color selected for the wording. FontAlso known as a typestyle, a font is the lettering style chosen for your text. LetterpressThis centuries-old technique results in a debossed impression that is usually printed on rich, textured paper. MonogramsPersonal monograms can either represent the first, middle and last name of one person, or a the first names and last name of a married couple. A monogram can also feature a single initial. Traditionally, when all of the initials are the same size, the initials appear in order, but when the center initial is larger, the initials represent the first, last and middle names, respectively; or first, last and first names of a married couple, respectively. MotifsTraditionally, a motif is a single, recurring design throughout a person's personal, business or wedding invitation/stationery. Return to Top FAQHow many invitations should I order? The number of invitations depends on the number of guests you plan to invite. Keep in mind that many guests are couples/families who receive one invitation. Taking Things Personally always recommends order at least 25 extra invitations for any that are returned, extra guests that need to be invited, and for all the many reasons extra invitations always come in handy! What should be included in my “Save-the-Date” announcement?Save-the-Date announcements can be used for any occasion, and should include the event date and city. The location of the ceremony is optional. In addition, while optional, you might want to include an additional page with travel details, such as nearby hotels and attractions so guests can plan their visit.
Depending on the type of event, invitations should be sent anywhere from four to eight weeks ahead of time.
Who should receive a wedding invitation?Everyone on the guest list should receive an invitation through the mail, including parents of the groom, the wedding party, and clergy members or judge and spouses. What types of wedding stationary are recommended? There are several types of wedding stationery:
How should I address my invitations?Formal event invitations should be addressed in traditional form, i.e., Mr. & Mrs. John Smith. Exceptions include a wife who keeps her family name, or if she is a physician, e.g., Dr. Jane Smith. How should I tell invited guests that children are not included?Because it is not correct to print "Please do not bring children," word of mouth is best. Ask your friends and relatives to help spread the word. What is the proper way to stuff the invitation and enclosures into the envelope?Enclosures should be placed into the envelope based on size. The invitation should always be touching the back of the envelope, so it should go in first, text side facing the envelope flap. The largest enclosure card should be placed closest to the invitation. Enclosure cards are often the same size, and therefore cards the same size should be placed in order of importance. The card that is most important for your guest to see would be placed on the top of the ensemble. All the pieces should be placed with the text facing the envelope flap, so all the pieces are easy to read as your guest opens the envelope. Typically, envelopes are stuffed in the following order:
If you are using double envelopes, the invitation and ensemble would be placed in the inner envelope. You can write your guest's names on the front of this inner envelope, which is then inserted into the mail, mailing envelope. The front of the inner envelope should be facing the flap of the outer envelope, so that when your guests removes the inner envelope, they are not looking at the flap side, they are looking at their names printed on the front. IMPORTANT: Take a sample of your entire invitation, completely assembled, to the post office to be weighed to ensure proper postage. Can I include registry information on an invitations?Traditionally, the best way to spread the news of any registry information is via word of mouth, even for a shower invitation. If necessary, the registry information can be included on the bottom of the invitation in a smaller font than the rest of the invitation text, or on a separate enclosure card inserted in the envelope. Return to Top EtiquetteWhat is the proper way to stuff the invitations and enclosures into the envelope? The invitation and enclosure cards are placed in the envelope in order of size and importance. The largest enclosure cards are placed closest to the invitation. When enclosure cards of the same size are used, the card that is most important for your guest to see would be placed on the top of the ensemble. When you place the invitation and enclosure cards into the envelope, they should all be facing toward you, so that when you remove them from the envelope, you are able to easily read all pieces of the ensemble. While holding the envelope so that you are looking at the back of it, we recommend that you stuff the envelope in the following order:
If you are using "double envelopes", you would place the invitation ensemble into the "inside" unsealed envelope. You would then write your guest's names on the front of this envelope. This envelope is then inserted into the "outside" gummed envelope. The front of the "inside" envelope should be facing you and inserted into the back of the "outside" envelope. TIP: Take a sample of your entire invitation -- completely assembled -- to the post office to be weighed to ensure proper postage. Return to Top |
